A backwashing filter is simple device. It consists mainly of a large tank filled with a filtering agent, called a medium, that performs a specific change in water that passes through it. Depending upon the medium chosen, and sometimes the pretreatment given the water, the filter may remove chlorine from city water, sediment particles from dirty well water, smelly hydrogen sulfide gas, iron, or perform other objectionable elements.

When the filter medium becomes saturated with the substance it is treating, then a specially designed control valve reverses the flow of water and “backwashes” the filter medium to renew it. Please go here for a more complete discussion of how backwashing filters work.

All filters on this page are complete. They include the filter valve specified, a yoke to connect to your plumbing, 1 polyglass mineral tank, a basket distributor with riser tube, and a gravel bed and funnel for easy installation of media. Everything you need.

For a simple, residential-sized filter, you might like to look at the simpler presentation on our 5600 Filter Page. It offers a one-size (10" X 56" mineral tank), one-valve (Fleck 5600) filter that includes shipping in the price.

This page allows greater variety of choice. It offers eight tank sizes and three control valve options, plus a variety of media to select from.

Media and accessories are not included in the prices in the first table below and are listed separately. Shipping charges, however, are included in all item prices.

A complete filter consists of the basic backwashing filter from the first table, a bypass valve or yoke to connect the filter to your plumbing from the second table, and filter media (the stuff that goes in the filter and performs the magic) from the third table. You’ll need an item from each of the three categories for a complete filter.

FM002 Calcite.
A standard medium used to increase the pH of acidic water. Calcite dissolves as acidic water passes through and must be replaced as it dissolves. Unless it is used in an upflow filter (not sold on this page), it must be backwashed.
1/2 cubic foot box (50 lbs.) : $73
FM206 Corosex.
Like Calcite, Corosex is used to raise the pH of acidic waters. It is normally used as a mixture with calcite. It supports higher flow rates and gives a greater increase in pH, but it tends to “cement” in hard water and when it is mixed at a ratio higher than 50% with calcite.
1/2 Cu. Ft. Box (37.5 lbs) : $95
FM027 Filox.
Superb iron and hydrogen sulfide medium.  Can be used independently or after any standard oxidizer. Chlorine tolerant, works well with aeration. Outlasts birm and greensand. Approximately 6 gpm of service flow per cu. foot of Filox. A dense medium. A 10" X 54" filter requires a backwash of about 10 gpm. Sold in 1/2 cu. ft. boxes only.

1/2 Cu. Ft. Box (57 lbs.) : $132
