Servicing your Pure Water Products Countertop Reverse
Osmosis Unit

Countertop RO units are among the easiest drinking water systems to
service. Usually it is merely a matter of changing the two or three
filters (the number depends on the unit model you have). The membrane (in
the long horizontal vessel on top of the unit--black on older models, white in most cases) is
changed with less frequency than the filters.
Membrane The reverse osmosis
membrane is best changed on need rather than time. To determine the
need, you should have a TDS tester. Read the tap water, then water
made by the RO unit. When the RO water reading begins to equal 15%
or 20% of the tap water reading, it's time to change. IMPORTANT:
Take your TDS test water from the unit before you change the filters.
New filters give a high reading until they are thoroughly rinsed. If you
don't have a TDS tester, you should change the membrane at least with
every third cartridge change.
Go here for specific membrane change
instructions. Filters Filters should be
replaced at least annually. The method of change depends on the
style of unit. For Style A units (with full-sized
filter vessels), remove the sump of the vessel from the cap using the
wrench provided. Remove the old cartridge, lubricate the
O-Ring in the sump lightly with silicon grease or Vaseline, replace
the cartridge, and retighten the sump. Don't over tighten.
"Snug" is usually good enough. Note: Carbon block and sediment
cartridges, with both ends open, have no top or bottom. Either way works.
Axial cartridges (specialty cartridges, usually) with a plastic shell must
be inserted with the small end toward the vessel cap. The arrow on the
vessel should point toward the cap.

| For Style B units with K or Gold Series
inline filters, remove the old filters by releasing the John
Guest fitting and removing the entire "plug-in elbow" from the old
filter. With K Series (or with Gold Series with John Guest
fittings installed), simply insert the new filter where the old one
was. Read the label to determine direction of flow and to
assure you are replacing the old filter with the correct new filter.
For Gold Series without fittings, remove the fittings from the old
filter, re-tape the threads (with 4 or 5 wraps of Teflon
tape), and install the fittings into the new filter. Important Startup Note:
On Style B units it's a good idea, though not absolutely mandatory, to remove
the inlet tube from the membrane housing (the tube on the end of the membrane
housing that has only one tube, the end with the cap) before turning on the
water after the cartridge change. Turn the water on with the removed tube
pointed toward a pan or a bucket, or into the sink, so that the unit can rinse
for a minute or so before the tube is plugged back in to the membrane housing.
This is done to protect the membrane from the "fines" (the black stuff) that
come from the carbon filter on startup. The other filter will rinse
itself to drain during the regular running of the filter. When the
membrane is rinsed, plug the tube back into the housing and follow the regular
startup instructions. |
For Style C units with Q Series filters, just screw the
old filter out of its cap and replace with new.
Startup After the filters (and membrane, if you changed it) have
been replaced, start the unit and operate it as usual. Let it run to
drain for at least two hours before capturing the water for drinking.
Upon startup, air will be released from the new carbon for some time, so
don't worry about the hissing and gurgling sounds. It will be a few
minutes--perhaps 15 minutes or so--before product water begins to issue
from the product line. This is because it takes time to fill the
final filter vessel. If there are questions or problems, don't hesitate
